Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No signup, no credits, no watermark and no reduced-resolution preview. The code is open source (MIT) and the AI model is Apache-2.0.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The AI model runs in your browser. Once the page and the model are loaded, removing a background works even offline.

Why is there a download the first time?

That is the AI model (about 44 MB). Your browser downloads it once and keeps it, so the next photos start straight away.

What happens to remove.bg?

According to its FAQ, the standalone remove.bg website stops on 1 December 2026 at 9:00 CET and the feature moves into Canva.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in recent iPhone and Android browsers. It is slower than on a computer: a few seconds per photo.

Can I use the images commercially?

Yes. The result is your own image: use it for product photos, marketplace listings, profile pictures or presentations.

What works best?

People, products and animals in front of a distinct background. Glass, smoke and fine hair against a similar background are hard for any tool.

Model and licences

Background removal uses the open-source ormbg model by Marvin Schirrmacher (Apache-2.0), run in your browser by ONNX Runtime Web (MIT). The model files are served unchanged from this site, split into parts, together with their licence and notice files. Kitlibre itself is MIT-licensed.
